Two sand harvesters died and one was injured on Tuesday after a quarry in which they were working collapsed.
The three were harvesting sand at the Bamburi quarry in Mombasa. Witnesses reported noticing a crack at the quarry which was followed by a loud bang that resulted in the workers being buried under the quarry rubble. One of the workers was confirmed dead on the spot while the other died while being ferried to hospital. The injured worker was treated at a nearby hospital and discharged.
In a separate incident, three gold miners were rescued after being trapped in a collapsed pit in Migori County.
The three were rushed by residents who rescued them to Dede dispensary in critical condition and were later transferred to Migori County Referral Hospital. Assistant County Commissioner Mima Weche said the soil above them was loose. She urged miners to be cautious to prevent such incidents.
